Why Learn NLP?
- NLP has its roots in creating change for the better and offers powerful techniques to transform unwanted habits, build self-esteem and develop positive and successful mindsets.
- According to Modern Psychology Magazine, "NLP may well be the most important vehicle for change in existence".
- In today's uncertain, chaotic and complex world, NLP provides you with powerful tools to control how you choose to change.
- In our current economic climate, NLP gives you a headstart to get back on to the career ladder, change direction or go for promotion.
- In work, you can apply NLP specifically to building confidence and success in interviews, presentations, meetings and negotiations.
- In your personal life, NLP enables you to improve relationships so you have more quality time and feel less stressed.
- You can use NLP to get rid of unwanted habits and overcome phobias that have held you back in life.
- Using NLP with children teaches them, from an early age, how to develop positive self-talk and strategies which solve problems and which are fun to learn so they grow up with a brighter outlook on life.
- NLP gives you a greater understanding of what makes people tick so you can get onto another person's wavelength and understand where they are coming from more easily.
What is NLP?
- Neuro: how we communicate with and through our senses
- Linguistic: how the language we use impacts our thoughts, feelings and behaviour
- Programming: how we can re-order our experience to change results
- Time Magazine states "NLP is an all purpose self improvement program and technology which has untapped potential for treating individual problems".
- NLP is advanced communication skills which teaches you about yourself and others so you can create more of the life you want, and be more supportive of people around you.
- NLP is the study of subjective experience which means that while we have similarities, we are all unique. So, for example, while we experience the same event, we perceive it slightly differently. NLP gives you an insight and appreciation of why we are both similar and different!
How Did NLP Develop?
- NLP was developed in the 1970s by two American academics who studied how three exceptional therapists achieved outstandings results in their work. These included family therapist, Virginia Satir; founder of Gestalt Therapy, Fritz Perls; and, hypnotherapist, Dr Milton Erickson.
- The founders, John Grinder and Richard Bandler, modelled the communications' strategies used by these therapists, incorporating key thinking from the British anthropologist and philosopher, Gregory Bateson, to form the basis of NLP.
- As Grinder and Bandler began teaching their findings to students, they further refined and developed their work and, as a result, the field of NLP grew. Today, NLP is widely used in therapy, business, education and health. Even Paul McKenna and Derren Brown both studied NLP on their path to becoming famous!
New to NLP?
The best way to learn NLP is to experience it!
This is because if you come along to a class and test the theory out for yourself, you can gain first hand experience of what works and how this may or may not be useful in your life.
Also, learning NLP in a group is a great way to reveal how we are both similar and different. You can gain insights into how to communicate with people who perceive life differently from you, and then try out different ways of behaving in a safe environment.
